Compress Image to 1MB
Marukit's Compress Image to 1MB is a free web tool that gets a large phone photo under 1 MB at the highest quality that fits. Need 2 MB or another size? Type it in the target box.
Your images are processed inside your browser and are never uploaded to our servers.
About this tool
Phone photos are often several megabytes. At 1 MB the tool can usually keep the full pixel size and only lower the quality a little, and the before/after view shows exactly what changed.
Other sizes: 20 KB · 50 KB · 100 KB · 200 KB
How to use the 1MB image compressor
- Choose the photo from your phone or computer.
- Keep 1 MB, or change the target, for example to 2 MB.
- Press Compress and compare before and after with the slider.
- Download the JPG and upload it.
Not working? Quick fixes
- Can't reach 1 MB? Leave 'Reduce dimensions if needed' on, so a very large image can be made a little smaller.
- Form says the file is still too big? Enter 0.95 MB to leave a margin, because some forms count 1 MB as 1,000,000 bytes.
- Browser can't open the photo? Convert iPhone HEIC photos with HEIC to JPG first.
Supported formats
- Input
- JPG, PNG, WebP (plus GIF, BMP and AVIF if your browser can open them)
- Output
- JPG or WebP
- Processing
- In your browser
Limitations
- 1 MB is applied as 1,024 KB (1,048,576 bytes). A form that counts 1 MB as 1,000,000 bytes is slightly stricter, so check the exact byte count shown, or enter 0.95 MB to leave a margin.
- Very large or detailed images may still need to be made smaller to fit; leave 'Reduce dimensions if needed' on.
- Transparent areas become white in JPG output.
- Camera details and GPS location are not kept in the output image.
Frequently asked questions
Does compressing to 1 MB reduce the resolution?
Usually not. Most phone photos fit under 1 MB by lowering the quality a little at full size. The result shows the pixel size so you can check.
How do I compress to 2 MB instead?
Change the number in Target size to 2 and keep MB selected. The button changes to 'Compress to 2 MB'.
Can I compress an iPhone HEIC photo to 1 MB?
Yes, if your browser can open HEIC (Safari can). Otherwise convert it with HEIC to JPG first, then compress.
Will the photo look worse?
At 1 MB most photos look the same on a screen. Use the before/after slider and zoom in on fine detail like hair or text to check.
Is my photo uploaded?
No. Everything runs in your browser.
